The Lady Braves Take Their Game to the Beach By Victoria Wahlers
Although Braves and beach don’t ordinarily go together, that’s where our Lady Braves Beach Volleyball girls will be found. Beach Volleyball is quite similar to Volleyball, just with a few tweaks. Beach volleyball is a 2 against 2 games, with best 2 out of 3 matches winning. One match in volleyball is complete when one side reaches 21 points. If the third match gets played it goes to only 15 points. Throughout the matches, the teams will then switch sides of the net every time the score is a new multiple of 7 (7,14,21).
Coach Jessica Hopkins heads up the 18 girls who make up the beach volleyball team. When she was asked why she enjoys being the coach, she responded, “I love coaching volleyball overall, but the beach is more relaxing than indoor since I’m not allowed to coach throughout the game and being outside is always nice.” The team qualifies for states this upcoming weekend, April 26 and 27, at Hickory Point. To qualify, the team had to place 1st in their division. Their division included Dr. Phillips High School and Montverde Academy, both located in Orlando. The weekend of April 26 and 27 LG will be having their 2019 prom, so only 10 out of the 18 girls will be attending states. Coach Hopkins stated ‘It is a great opportunity for my younger players to go and get the experience of states. “Alex Gallagher, one of the players attending states gave her opinion on the sport, “I like Beach Volleyball because I love being outside and it’s very relaxing.” Cali Brooks agrees with Gallagher and adds, “It keeps me in shape while doing something I love.” Coach Hopkins and these girls have been working so hard this season and preparing for states. So, don’t forget sunblock and come out and support the Lady Braves Beach Volleyball Team at states!
