Pin to Win By Kate Butcher
On Saturday, January 26, 2019, Lake Gibson’s Varsity Wrestling team won their second State Dual’s championship at Kissimmee Osceola high school. With the help of their coach Danny Walker, they triumphed over a nine-point shortfall to beat Charlotte 39-33. Punchie Gray (160), Angel Hernandez (170), Chase Ayers (120), and Ashton Habeil (182) came through with six-point pins. Charlotte began to reel in points and pins taking the lead with a score of 33-24. The Braves had four more matches to get the points they needed to win. Connor Williams (126) and Evan Butler (132) pulled in three-points, followed by Shannon Hanna (138), who pulled in five points. Andreus Bond (145) was the last to go in the match. Bond won his match leading the Braves to victory. This will be Lake Gibson’s second State championship following their first in 2018 when they delivered a 33-32 win against Riverdale. The Braves are now training to wrestle in the individual State tournament in March. Lake Gibson is so proud of the wrestling team and can’t wait to see what they have in store for next season.
