Nike Controversy by Eli Allen
Free agent NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick was just signed to be the face of Nike. There is a huge
Controversy surrounding this decision made by Nike because Kaepernick is known to kneel during the
National Anthem. He does this to raise awareness for equal rights and police brutality against people of
color. This sparked a wave and soon every team had at least one player kneeling in protest.
Some people view this protest as a sign of disrespect to the National Anthem and the American flag. The Nike
ad reads “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.” Kaepernick started this protest
while he was playing in San Francisco Forty Niners but then opted out of his contract in 2016. Nike also
released a commercial with the same message. However, this isn’t the first time Nike has done
something controversial in an ad or commercial. In 1995, Nike released the “If you let me play” ad
supporting women in sports and to shed light on gender equality. The Colin Kaepernick ad is definitely
testing the boundaries for this multi-billion dollar company, but they have experience with situations
This ad could ruin Nike or help spread their company – we will see how this pans out through
the rest of this year.
